Acid pond water (low pH) can occur if large quantities of decomposing organic debris are present. Low pH levels cause an increase in pollutants and a shortage of oxygen. Alkaline conditions (high pH) can result from water run-off particularly in hard water areas. High pH levels harm fish and damage plant life. Testing for pH is therefore essential not only before fisha re introduced but afterwards as well so that any changes in water conditions are quickly identified and remedied.
